Took me longer than promised but here is the info many were asking for on the Mic config's for Jesse Valach's new album. Jesse uses a classic setup; Strat into a DeVille. Also happens to create a serious noise floor due to the single coil pickups, which does require noise reduction before mixing. I am a huge fan of iZotope's RX 3 for this - nothing better in my opinion. Close mic's in coincident are the Heil PR30 and AKG 414 - very close. Ambient mic is the classic AWA Ribbon at Coloursound Studios and although phase alignment with a figure 8 mic is never absolute (due to the sound captured off the back of the ribbon) I managed to get it very accurate. For this I used an old method with a new twist: a White Noise audio file looping on my iPhone placed on top of the amp, a studio assistant with headphones gradually moving the AWA position allows the 'sweep' to be monitored whilst the Phase on the mic pre is inverted. When the noise signal is at it's narrowest bandwidth the phase is a close as I can get it. Flip the phase back on the pre and you're ready to go - try it out for yourself.
