This is a quandary for me and many artists - the cost of flights in order to perform and create an income; but I’m not referring to the expense of the airline service, rather the cost to our planet.
I was able to calculate a return flight to LA from Melbourne in order to take delivery of a custom-made musical instrument using the above service (click-through-image).
My emissions will be 4.3 tonne, which is almost eight (8) times the emissions per year, per person, in order to not contribute to Climate Change (currently set at 0.6 tonne). The expense of my Carbon Offset on today’s AU dollar is an extra $200. I can allocate any number of ways to contribute to projects across the globe set up to counteract CO2 emissions.
Sadly, there is no such service here in Australia, but I am awaiting an email from the Climate Foundation here in AU as to local projects I can support financially to offset my flights. Relatively, this is a minuscule amount of money, and I suggest us artists should be calculating this into our travel budgets from hereon.
I accept the only real way to avoid this is not fly at all, but the alternative was three flights to have the trumpet shipped here, sent back for adjustments, then again returned to me. This is not an attempt to avoid responsibility for my own carbon footprint; quite the contrary - I am trying to be conscious of it, and own it .
