Ever wondered how to get the Snare drum to take up more of the stereo width in your productions? Perhaps you could try this technique from LA engineers that I finally got to track with this week: 1 on top, 2 on the bottom. Place a stereo pair in XY (Coincident) or very close to this arrangement beneath the "snares" of the drum. Pan them hard Left & Right. Ensure phase coherency with each other AND the snare top mic. The result is fantastic; a snare sound that emanates from the centre outwards providing a broad rich sound but still with a snap. Greatly balances the presence of the snare within the final mix and allows tweaking to offset your overhead snare position. Here's a classic pair of SONY condensors doing the job very nicely at Coloursound Studios.
